Changes to legislation for the National Disability Insurance Scheme aim to make the NDIS fairer and more sustainable with clearer rules and better outcomes for participants.
The changes to the legislation are important. They will:
- give clearer information about what the NDIS does and does not fund
- improve fairness and consistency in access and planning decisions
- strengthen safeguards and reduce the risk of harm, fraud and misuse
- improve trust and confidence in how the NDIS operates
- support the long‑term sustainability of the scheme.

These changes will be introduced gradually over 12 months from 1 October 2026 when a participant’s plan is created, reassessed or renewed.

Learn how the new NDIS plan variation pathway for high supports needs participants will work.These changes will be introduced gradually over 12 months from 1 October 2026 when a participant’s plan is created, reassessed or renewed. Participants will be notified ahead of their plan reassessment or renewal. Participants can continue using their current plan and supports until their plan is reassessed or renewed.
