NDIS. What it is and how it works.

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is the federal government’s funding scheme. Designed to offer you better choice, the scheme’s funding allows you to choose the support you want so you can reach your goals and live your best life. NDIS is all about increasing your opportunities to build everyday skills, participate in your community, secure a job and live as independently as you want.

You get to choose what support you access, how you access them and the service provider you use to do those things. It helps connect you to allied health services, support groups, social and community groups, and services which will open doors and provide you with a world of choices.

The NDIS now supports over 500,000 Australians with direct funding based on their needs and aspirations  — that’s a whole lot of people making a whole lot of choices for themselves. We can’t wait to see what you have in mind.

The NDIS provides funding to eligible people based on their individual needs. Every NDIS participant has an individual plan that lists their goals and the funding they have received. NDIS participants use their funding to purchase supports and services that will help them pursue their goals.

Everyone has different goals but they could include things like getting and keeping a job, making friends or participating in a local community activity. NDIS participants control the support they receive, when they receive it, and who provides it.

The types of supports that the NDIS may fund for participants include:

  • daily personal activities
  • transport to enable participation in community, social, economic and daily life activities
  • workplace help to allow a participant to successfully get or keep employment in the open or supported labour market
  • therapeutic supports including behaviour support
  • help with household tasks to allow the participant to maintain their home environment
  • help to a participant by skilled personnel in aids or equipment assessment, set up and training
  • home modification design and construction
  • mobility equipment
  • vehicle modifications.

If you are worried about the quality or safety of the NDIS supports or services you are receiving, you can make a complaint to the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission.
